Child Fatalities: 38 Children in Indiana with 79% under age 3
In 2008, there were 46 child fatalities: 24 from physical abuse & 22 from neglect.
Drugs and/or alcohol were involved in 20% of the cases
The 4 highest attributions to death were:
- 15 abuse head trauma
- 5 asphyxiation
- 5 vehicular
- 4 drowning
Overall, 56% of the deaths were children under the age 2 and 78% of the children were under the age of 5

In 2008, there were 90,177 total reports of child abuse and neglect in Indiana.
Of that total, 21,485 cases were substantiated.
Of the substantiated reports:
68% were Neglect
18% were Sexual Abuse
14% were Physical Abuse

In 2007, there were 36 deaths due to abuse and/or neglect.
Of those 36 deaths, 66% were children under the age of 3.
There were 86,110 reported cases of abuse, 22,560 of which were substantiated.
Of those 22,560 substantiated cases, 89% were neglect cases, 21.4% were sexual abuse, and 14% were physical abuse.
